LGPS Central pool holds first Responsible Investments Summit

The LGPS Central pool was proud to host its first Responsible Investment Summit, ‘At the Heart of Investments’ in Birmingham last week.

Pension Committee and Local Pension Board representatives from all of the Pool’s Partner Funds attended the event to hear about key Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues pension funds may need to take into consideration when taking investment decisions.

They were joined by guest speakers from FTSE Russell, Hermes EOS, The Church of England Pensions Board, Squire Patton Boggs and fellow pensions pool the Local Pensions Partnership.

Councillor Roger Phillips, Chair of the Local Government Pension Scheme Advisory Board, also hosted a session on the Scheme response to ESG considerations.

LGPS Central Limited CEO Mike Weston, who co-hosted the event, said: “Responsible Investment has become something that pension funds can’t afford to ignore. Our aim for the day was to discuss the most pertinent issues the Pool is thinking about and build a better understanding of how we can get the best possible returns for pension scheme members while also creating a world they can enjoy their retirement in.”

Topics discussed during the day included four themes the pool has agreed to focus stewardship activity over the next year – climate change, single-use plastics, tax transparency, and disruptive technology – and how active engagement and investment products are evolving to aid management of climate change.

Michael Marshall, LGPS Central Limited’s Director for Responsible Investment, added: “It’s extremely pleasing to see our Partner Funds so engaged on the subject of Responsible Investment. Anyone who keeps up-to-date with the news will know the impact that issues such as climate change and tax transparency are having on the world we live in. As large-scale and long-term investors, we need to ensure what we do takes these issues into consideration.”
